It is a drugs produce to treat herpes simplex viral and varicella zoster infection.
Usage
It is used to treat the following;
1.
Occurrences in a
short term interval and long terms oral and oesophageal herpes virus in
immunocompromised patients.
2.
Genital herpes
3.
Herpetic kerato uveitis
4.
Severe case of zoster, such as necrosis or extensive
forms, facial or ophthalmic zoster
It also used as a preventive agent in patient with
recurrence in a short term interval or severe recurrence

Come in 200mg and 800mg tablets

Prescription
1.
Occurrences in a short term interval and long terms
oral and oesophageal herpes virus in immunocompromised patients.
Children under 2 years should be
given 200mgs/days in 5 divided doses for 7 days
Children above 2 years and adult
should be given 400mg/day in 5 divided dose for 7 days
2.
Genital herpes
Children above 2 years and adult
should be given 400mg/day in 3 divided dose for 7 days
For immunocompromised patients,
the treatment should be continue until clinical resolution.

It also used as a preventive agent in patient with
recurrence in a short term interval or severe recurrence
Children bellow 2 years, should
be given 200mg/days in 2 divided doses
Children above 2 years and adult
should be given 400mg/day in 2 divided dose
20kg, should be given 50 100mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses, and should
not exceed 100mg/kg/day.
Adult 3 to 6g/day in 4 divided
doses, and should not exceed 6g/day

Severe case of zoster, such as necrosis or extensive
forms, facial or ophthalmic zoster
Adult should be given 800mg/day in 5 divided dose for 7
days.
Precautions
Never administer acyclovir
to patient that is hypertensive to the drugs
The administering dose should be reduce in a patient with
renal impairment
Make sure the patient take a lot of water when on treatment
with acyclovir.

Disorder of neurologic in a patient elderly patient and
patient with renal impairment.
Advice
Pregnancy: no contra-indication
Breast feeding: no contra indication
Acyclovir should be
started earlier for treatment of herpes simplex possible 90 hours after the one
set appearance of the lesion, it help to reduce duration of the infection also
reduce the severity.
A treatment of herpes zoster should be commenced preferable
70 hours after the one set of the lesion
